An Orthodontist Explains What Early Interceptive Treatment Is for Children

Orthodontist Brick Township, NJ

Your child should see an orthodontist by age seven when they already have a good number of permanent teeth. At this age, the orthodontist can accurately chart the growth and development of their teeth and jaw. They can catch and correct emerging orthodontic problems before they grow in complexity. Early or interceptive treatments are measures an orthodontist uses to get ahead of bite issues. Here is why this type of oral care is important:

An orthodontist explains the time factor in orthodontic treatment

An orthodontist tracks the growth and development of their young patient’s mouth. They check that their teeth erupt on time in the correct alignment. Depending on the specific problem, the orthodontist will either start treatment or wait until the child gets older.

Timely orthodontic treatment happens in stages, starting with a preventative phase. An orthodontist will use this phase to guide the position of permanent teeth and the growth of the child’s jaws. This phase should begin at age seven, while the patient still has many of their baby teeth. Early treatment achieves one or more of the following goals:

  • Prevents an orthodontic problem from developing altogether
  • Intercepts and reverses orthodontic problems in their early stages
  • Guides the growth of the jaw to mitigate

Interceptive or preventative treatment helps a patient to avoid more complex treatment options down the road. It can also lead to shorter times since the developing bone structures of a child’s jaw are easier to mold with orthodontic appliances than an adult’s. Here are a few measures that fall under the category of early orthodontic treatment.

Orthodontic appliance

An orthodontist may use a temporary or removable appliance to align specific teeth in a young patient’s dental arch. At this young age, the jaws of a young child will respond readily to the guidance of orthodontics, resulting in faster results. This means that the child will need less intervention as they get older.

Teeth extraction

Some kids suffer from crowding and crooked teeth due to their jaws being too small for all their teeth.  Crowding can also be caused by milk teeth not falling out when they should. An orthodontist may use tooth extraction to correct both these causes of crowding.

The ideal candidate for early interceptive orthodontics

Some orthodontic problems lend themselves to the early intervention of interceptive orthodontics. Other conditions can only be resolved after all the permanent teeth come in. An orthodontist will recommend early treatment for:

  • Teeth crowding
  • Gaps in the teeth
  • An underbite
  • Jaw malformation

The orthodontist will hold off on treatment for a slight misalignment or buck teeth. Early treatment for such conditions may not be enough to remove the need for additional phases of orthodontics.
